Extractions
We do not currently offer extractions at this location at this time. Instead, we refer to several oral surgeons around Chicagoland who are best trained to provide you the easiest, most comfortable experience. Please contact us if you’d like to know more.
Dr Schoening makes every effort to preserve your natural teeth. However, extractions are necessary when decay has made the tooth unsalvageable or when you have an advanced periodontal disease. But don’t worry, we have a plan to replace your tooth!
FAQ
Do I need my tooth extracted?
Here’s a few of the most common reasons why a tooth might need to be removed…
The tooth has already been restored with a large root canal and crown and then breaks or gets infected again
You have a fracture in the root of your tooth
The tooth has become loose from gum disease and cannot be saved
What should I expect during an extraction procedure?
We ensure that your comfort is always our top priority. Strong, local anesthetic is important so you have an easy experience. Within a few minutes, the tooth can be loosened and removed and clean gauze is placed for you to bite on. Once you have a good clot and you’re feeling ready, you free to head home. We recommend you get a ride home or have someone escort you if you are not comfortable.
“What are my post op instructions for the next few days?”
The first 48 hours after having a tooth removed, it is important that you don’t disturb the clot. Here’s a few suggestions to ensure you heal quickly:
No spitting…you’ll spit out the clot
No straws…you’ll suck out the clot
No carbonated beverages….the clot could be loosened by the bubbles
Keep gently biting on moist gauze until you see the bleeding has stopped. We will give you gauze to take home. This usually occurs within the first 24 hours, though some people have some minor oozing of blood from the socket on the second day.
If you are concerned that the area won’t stop bleeding, bite on a moist, black tea bag. The tannins in black tea promote blood clot formation.
Pain medication options are discussed with all patients. We do not frequently do procedures which require narcotic pain medication as normal anti-inflammatory pain medication, given properly, is very effective.
If you have pain in the area of the extraction which lingers for more than 3 days, or worsens, please contact our office right away. If we are not available, please leave a message or email us.
How long is the healing process?
For most normal extractions you can expect to be feeling better withing 2-3 days. Plan to take the rest of the day off after the procedure and head straight home. Have ready a soft diet and lots of non-carbonated fluids. Clean pillow cases and towels with extra gauze at home can be helpful.

Am I going to walk out with no front tooth?
Absolutely NOT, we always make a plan to cosmetically replace a front tooth on the day of extraction. Options are specific to each patient, and we will be sure to discuss all options with you when we meet you!
